Media management for the Bottle Stop campaign

Murdered Phil Sherriff's wife Jane

Jane Sherriff, the brave mum-of-two whose husband was killed in a senseless glassing attack, became the centre of a media whirlwind when his murderer was brought to justice.

Phil was attending a star-studded corporate event at a London nightclub in April 2012 when he was attacked with a broken bottle. He lost five pints of blood, fell into a coma and died four days later with Jane by his side.

Devastated but determined, Jane launched Bottle Stop – a campaign to ban glasses and glass bottles from all late-night city-centre nightclubs. On social media word began to spread, but to succeed the campaign needed top-level media support.

Shortly after the launch of Bottle Stop, Medavia was brought on board to advise Jane on securing high-quality, sustained coverage for Phil’s story and the campaign in the national media.

Our senior media consultant Tom liased with police officials to draft and approve statements following the murder trial, and stood beside Jane as she gave a press conference to reporters on the steps of the Old Bailey.

Medavia then became Jane’s press office, negotiating a string of exclusive deals with the Sun, ITV and a national magazine while co-ordinating wider coverage with the BBC and regional press.

Medavia continues to support Jane and Bottle Stop leaders while they build a lasting legacy for Phil through legislative change.
