Dita Pepe photography project

A photographer has taken photobombing to a whole new level by sitting for family portraits with dozens of complete strangers for a bizarre photo series.

Dita Pepe, 41, squeezed herself into family portraits with more than 30 different ‘husbands’ who are in fact men she has no personal connection to at all. She often appears alongside her real-life daughter, Ida, 11, for the weird family pictures.

The resulting portraits appear perfectly natural but are simply Mrs Pepe’s fantasies made real.

Mrs Pepe said: “Before arranging for the photographs I ask questions about my imaginary partner’s values and belief.

“When I know how they feel about life, I dress in their wives’ clothing, and use their personal belongings to help me fit into their lifestyle.

“I ask about hairstyles and the facial expressions, poses and gestures the wives would use.”

Mrs Pepe, who studied the therapeutic potential of photography at university, explained that the photo set, entitled ‘Self Portraits with Men’, aims to explore the differences a life partner can make to an individual’s lifestyle.

She said her photographs also help her evaluate herself and her role as a family member.

She said: “I ran away from home at the age of 18 and had a lot of questions about myself to answer from a young age.

“Later, I started dealing with the role of being a partner and a mother. I started to focus on other people – trying to find what inspired me about them. I think everyone is inspiring.”

Mrs Pepe took the photos in environments where the models felt most at home.

She said: “The setting of the photograph is relevant and important. I made sure that it felt like a game to the other people in the photographs.”

Mrs Pepe, of Malenovice in the Czech Republic, recently published a book of portrait photography with Czech photographer Bara Baronová. The book, entitled ‘Love Yourself’ is a collection of portraits of single women from Japan.
