Geek themed wedding

Two die hard Doctor Who fans spent £12,000 to throw the ultimate geeky wedding.

IT consultant Dave Held, 33, married retail manager Gwenn, 26, in a wedding inspired by all things nerdy, including Doctor Who, Star Wars and DC Comics.

The couple first met at a Scottish-themed renaissance fair where they instantly fell in love over their shared interests in geek culture.

Mr Held said: “We bonded over shows like Doctor Who, Sherlock and The Big Bang Theory.

“Being a geek is part of who we are. Gwenn is a DC comic book and reenactment geek, while I’m a nerdy computer guy who loves pop culture, anime and video games.”

The ceremony took place on May 4th – recognised by geeks all over the world as Star Wars Day.

Mrs Held said: “All of Dave’s groomsmen had Stormtrooper pins on their vests, except his best man, who had Darth Vader.”

Mr Held said: “Gwenn had a tiny TARDIS on her garters and her bobby pins. There was even a small TARDIS hidden on the back of our wedding cake.

Mrs Held said: “I gave Dave the same kind of sneakers David Tennant wore as the Doctor and TARDIS cufflinks as a wedding present.”

Guests were treated to a wide range of nerdy surprises.

Mr Held said: “Most of our friends and family are geeks so it wasn’t too uncomfortable for them.

“At our reception there were people playing with swords, giant spoons, light sabers and sonic screwdrivers.”

Mr and Mrs Held, from San Jose in California in the USA, even wrote their own sci-fi themed vows.

Mrs Held said: “Dave said ‘you are the Scully to my Mulder’ and I said ‘you are the Doctor to my companion’ – although sometimes I feel more like the Doctor.”

The couple are also big Disney fans and took inspiration from the film Tangled.

Mr Held said: “Our First dance was to the song ‘I See the Light’ and Gwenn’s dress, which she made herself, was inspired by Rapunzel’s wedding dress.”

It took Mr and Mrs Held a year to plan their dream wedding.

Mr Held said: “When we started I had no idea it was going to look the way it did in the end. It was so beautiful, so personal, and so unique, I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

“If you’re planning a wedding be creative, be passionate, and most of all, be crazy.”

Doctor Who continues its 50-year run on BBC One on Saturday at 8.30pm.
