Meerkat stands guard

Meerkat on patrol! A meerkat on a British farm climbs a tree to keep watch over his friends.

These pictures show the moment a meerkat climbed up a tree to guard his foraging friends at Old MacDonald’s Farm in Brentwood, Essex.

The cautious critter jumped to action when some birds started circling above.

Photographer Hani Abu Rahmeh, 46, snapped a picture of the protective mammal last Sunday (OCT 5).

Mr Rahmeh, of London, said: “There were some birds flying above the farm so this one meerkat took it upon himself to climb up a tree to keep watch.

“It was a nice sunny day so the other meerkats stayed on the ground foraging – they looked like they knew they were safe.”

Professor Tim Clutton-Brock of the University of Cambridge, founder of the Kalahari Meerkat Project which was featured in the BBC series Meerkat Manor, said: “Meerkats take it in turn to stand on guard – usually the males keep watch more than the females.

“The meerkat on guard will make an alarm call upon seeing danger.”
